Insomnia occurs when an individual has difficulty sleeping. This can include restless sleep, trouble falling asleep, frequent awakening in the middle of the night followed by difficulty getting back to sleep and waking up too early in the morning. Poor quality of sleep can have an impact on functioning during the daytime, as it can cause sleepiness, trouble concentrating or focusing and irritability.

Approximately 30-40% of adults complain of disturbances in their sleep. Some people experience Primary Insomnia, which is not related to any other condition. However, many people experience Insomnia that is related to another condition such as Anxiety or Depression.

If you experience trouble sleeping, then you know how taxing it can be. You have difficulty sleeping. Then you start to feel distressed by your inability to sleep and you worry about it constantly. You can’t fall asleep because your mind is preoccupied with worry. Eventually you develop a vicious cycle. This pattern affects not only your nights, but your days as well. Your performance at work goes down. Your mood feels low. You feel exhausted and fatigued. There is an end to your sleepless nights and tired days. SPRI is currently researching innovative medications to help you obtain a good night’s sleep.
