Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating illness. People with schizophrenia
often lose touch with reality and have difficulties maintaining social
relationships. They may hear things that other people cannot hear
(such as voices), and have visions while they are awake.
An estimated 0.5- 1.0% of the population suffer from schizophrenia.
Symptoms typically first appear in men who are in their late teens
or early twenties, and in women who are in their twenties and thirties.
However, symptoms can present themselves at any time, including
childhood.
It can be a very emotional and frustrating experience when a loved
one is suffering from schizophrenia. Their personality seems different,
and their behavior may seem odd. They might talk about things that
don’t seem to make sense, or become very suspicious of others.
Even if they deny that they are ill, it is important to get help.
